Habitats Regulations

In 1994 government published the Habitats Regulations which map the requirements of the Habitats (SAC) and Birds (SPA) Directives onto British institutions in England and Wales (and similar provisions were published in Scotland).

Apart from site selection, which has already been covered at length, there are two principal components in the regulations

- a requirement that operations and activities that could affect the site should be managed by the Relevant Authorities, acting together and using their existing powers.

- a process for evaluating plans and projects that may affect the site

All well and good, but as usual the devil is in the detail.
