EXPERIENCE:

I qualified as a Naval Architect under a management trainee scheme based at the Vickers Ltd. Naval Yard in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. This included a short period working on the Polaris Programme at the time when network analysis was just being imported from the USA to the UK

I joined Reed International in order to gain process industry experience where he worked in the operational research department looking at projects in the paper industry including management at imported pulp and paper stocks from Canada to exercises at other Reed subsidiaries.

I was invited to join A & P Appledore International working on several international shipbuilding projects. After three years in aviation I joined Associated British Ports as Business Development Manager.

Apart from general commercial projects I became a Director of ABP Research & Consultancy Ltd. which deals mainly with port hydraulic research problems such as dredging and siltation. I was also a Director of Community Network Services Ltd. which is jointly owned by ABP and P&O. Its role is to provide EDI services to the maritime transport community.

For both ABP and CNS I have been responsible for developing their involvement in several EC projects and I was Chairman of the Maritime Directives Implementation Group of the EDI Panel of the MIF.

Since August 1995 I concentrated solely on environmental matters and coordination of European issues affecting ABP with the title of Environment Manager. Much of the activity was been concerned with implementation of the Habitats and Birds Directives and their impact on the 23 ABP ports, and the development of environment management systems for ABP.

Since retirement, I have carried out some commissions for clients, mainly in the environmental field. During 2002/3 I have chaired a subgroup of the DEFRA Review of Marine Nature Conservation dealing with the provision of environmental information to sea users. I have also given a number of presentations to clubs and societies relating to environmental matters.

I also cruise my own yacht which is based on the Solent.
