The Evolving Environment |

|
As a yachtsman who went to school in Southampton and has lived and sailed there for the last twenty years, I believe the Solent is heading into an imminent crisis. In my last job before retiring, as environment manager for ABP, I came to understand the environmental pressures, the way the area is, and could be, managed. However, the pressures are more than just environmental. These web pages set out the problem and offer some solutions in, I hope, an interesting way. Please use the email response form to comment. |

Fluffy clouds, a smart southwest breeze, and a favourable tide. Rounding Calshot, we tucked a reef in the main, and took a few rolls in the genoa and headed down the West Solent. . As usual, we had the VHF scanning Channels 12, 16 and 67. It was one of the better summer weekends. The problem was where to spend Saturday night. We knew Newtown would be full, Lymington Town would be heaving, and we had heard an announcement on Channel 16 that Yarmouth was full and could accept no more boats. It was not yet 11 o’clock! |
